VyOS Overview #
VyOS is an open source router operating system. For more information visit the VyOS home page. VyOS provides both Long Term Support (LTS) and “Rolling” releases. The LTS versions require a subscription, but the Rolling builds can be downloaded and installed without a subscription. This test installation was done with a VyOS Rolling Build.
1. Install VyOS #
2.1 What you will need for installation #
- Shunya N-BOX mini server
- USB drive (at least 8GB)
- HDMI Monitor
- USB Keyboard
- Internet connection
- Laptop/PC
2.2 Steps #
2.2.1. Make bootable USB for VyOS #
- Download the VyOS installation image from – Link
This screenshot shows an example installation with version future 1.5.0 of VyOS. We recommend downloading the latest available version. - Download and install balenaEtcher from balenaEtcher website.
- Insert your USB Drive and open balenaEtcher.
- Click on “Flash from file” and select the VyOS installer image file.
- Click on “Select target” and choose your USB drive.
- Click on “Flash!” This will write the VyOS installer to the USB drive.

2.2.2. Install VyOS #
- Access BIOS and set boot order:
- Power off the device.
- Connect the monitor.
- Insert the USB device into a USB port.
- Plug in a USB keyboard.
- Power on the device, press the
DELETEkey, and verify that it boots to the BIOS.
- Select the “Boot” tab, then “FIXED BOOT ORDER Priorities,” and confirm that “Boot Option #1” is set to “USB Device.”
The screenshot may show an example of a SanDisk USB device, the manufacturer’s name may change or may not be displayed. - Press “F4” to save and exit the BIOS.
- Reboot the device i.e (power off and power on)
- The device should boot into the VyOS installer.

- Install VyOS
- To install VyOS permanently on your device, you have to first run it live from USB.
- Once VyOS live is running, Login using the username
vyosPasswordvyos
- Once logged in run the command
install image
This will start the permanent installation of VyOS
- The installer will prompt these questions
- When prompted, Partition (Auto/Parted/Skip) [Auto] : Press
ENTER(i.e Choose Auto)
- When prompted, Install the image on? : Press
ENTER(i.e Choose the default disk, this will be the largest disk available)
- When prompted, “How big of a root partition should I create?” Press
ENTERto keep the default settings. - When prompted, “Which one should I copy to sda? [/opt/vyatta/etc/config.boot.default]”: Press
ENTERto keep the default settings.
- When prompted, “Which drive should GRUB modify the boot partition on?:” The option should match the option chosen in step 3.2 above. (If you are not sure which one to choose Press
ENTERto keep the default settings.)
- When prompted, Partition (Auto/Parted/Skip) [Auto] : Press
- Remove the installation USB and Reboot the device to boot into VyOS.

- Once rebooted VyOS will boot up.

VyOS installation is complete!
